NEWS ~ Dell prepares a laptop that disassembles in less than a minute!
For a year, Dell has been working on a modular and evolutive laptop, where each part, including the screen, could be changed by the user. This Concept Luna improves this year with the possibility to disassemble the whole device in less than a minute.
While France has just implemented a repair bonus, and the reparability index has become a real buying argument, Dell is playing the good student with the Luna Concept. Announced in 2021, this laptop project is based on the same principle as the Fairphone or Framework smartphone, with the promise of creating a device made up solely of modular and upgradeable components, such as memory, hard disk or processor.
For season 2 of this concept, Dell has improved the ergonomics with a clever process to remove the top of the keyboard, located above the keys. Simply insert a paper clip or any other sharp object and the shell lifts off. Then, like a surgeon who would have the laptop's entrails revealed before his eyes, you start by removing the keyboard, and then the rest becomes child's play since no part is welded to the motherboard.
Modular is the future of the laptop:
The PC can be disassembled in less than a minute, and to prove that it is within everyone's reach, the manufacturer demonstrated this with a robot. Even the screen panel can be removed, and thus replaced; the chassis, and all components are accessible. It is then a kind of digital puzzle to put everything back in place.
For now, the Concept Luna remains a prototype and Dell does not give any release date. But the ambition is clearly to launch a modular laptop, where each part could be changed, either in case of problem or to improve the power of the device. To facilitate these modifications, each part would have its own QR code, and it would be enough to scan this code to receive the corresponding component.
