SECURITY ~ Difference between cryptography and encryption

The key difference between cryptography and encryption is that cryptography is a science, while encryption is a technique.

Cryptography:

Cryptography is the use of encryption and decryption techniques.

Encryption:

Encryption is a method of making data unreadable without the possession of additional information. This additional information is the method used to encrypt and the key used by the method. The method is a function applied to two inputs, which are the data to be encrypted (usually called plaintext) and the key. The key and the plaintext determine the encrypted version of the data, usually called ciphertext.

In short:

Cryptography is a field of practice surrounding secure communications. Encryption, on the other hand, is a two-way mathematical operation that renders information unusable, i.e., produces ciphertext. The main objective is to ensure the confidentiality of information.
