NETWORK ~ IMAP protocol 📧
IMAP (Internet Messaging Access Protocol), is an Internet standard that allows messages to be retrieved from a mail server. The main document defining the IMAP protocol is RFC (Request for Comments) 3501.
IMAP is an application layer Internet protocol that uses the underlying transport layer protocols to establish host-to-host communication services for applications. This allows the use of a remote mail server. The known port address for IMAP is 143.
IMAP and POP:
IMAP is a newer and more advanced standard for storing and retrieving email than the Post Office Protocol (POP). It allows you to store messages in multiple folders and supports folder sharing. It also supports online mail management, such as with webmail applications where messages do not have to be stored on the user's computer.
📧The IMAP standard does not include e-mail sending operations. The Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) is used to send e-mails.
